Flood Relief: Opportunities To Serve:

Reprinted from Chris Royalty at 24Church.com:
This Saturday will be a big day in Cheatham County for our recovery and relief efforts and you have several different ways you can put your Hands On Cheatham County if you have the time:

1. Community Clean Up - There are literally hundreds of homes in our area that have experienced some level of flood damage from a few feet of water in the basement to complete destruction. All of these homes need assistance from moving out personal items, furniture and appliances to pulling up carpet and tearing out drywall. The Cheatham Chamber is organizing this effort and will kick it off with a Briefing and Assignment at 7:00am this Saturday May 15 at Cheatham Middle School. PLEASE be sure to first register as a volunteer at www.cheathamchamber.org 'Hands On Cheatham County'.

If you will be a part of this clean up effort, you are STRONGLY urged to first attend the Flood Disaster Trainings Thursday 5/13 at 6:30pm at Freds in Ashland City (the Donation Center). You will need this information for your own safety and for that of the homes you will be working on.

2. Community Family Relief Day - The Pleasant View Civitan Club and several other groups are working tirelessly to plan and organize a community event this Saturday 5/15 to benefit and support the families of Cheatham County that have been affected by the flood. This event is in conjunction with their previously scheduled Movie in the Park and will be full day! They are seeking volunteers to come out and help them love on these families, lend a hand and bring a smile to their faces. There will be family friendly events, inflatables, live music, food and much more. Wether you are able to serve or not, you are encouraged to come out with your family and have some fun! Spend time with your neighbors and new friends and love on people!

This volunteer opportunity is perfect for those of you who have small children or are physically unable to clean out houses or just want to love on families who need it. If you are interested helping out with this, please email Deb.Haines@24Church.com. There will be more details coming in the next few days!

3. Collection and Distribution Sites  - Both the FRED's location and the Bethesda Center are still in need of volunteers! Hundreds of families have been helped by the generosity of this community through these two locations and the need has not gone away just because most of the water is gone. If you have a few hours to help receive donations, sort and organize and love on the families coming in, call the Cheatham Chamber at (615) 792-6722.

4. Feed People! - The volunteers that will be out in the homes and in the Donation centers are and will be working non-stop! If your talent is Hospitality and Food, consider bringing lunches, drinks and snacks to these volunteers. A bottle of water and a ham sandwich will go a long way towards our recovery. If you would like to help with this, please email Gina.Hollingsworth@24Church.com.

Baby Clothes for Needy Families

Strick’s Gift is a new non-profit organization dedicated to helping newborns in need in Nashville, Tennessee. While many children are born to families who have the means to provide plenty in terms of clothes, blankets and bedding, many other families are unable to afford these necessary items. Strick’s Gift is a way to bridge this need.

Strick’s Gift is dedicated to the memory of and was founded in honor of our first son, Strick. We want to celebrate life and welcome with joy the babies that make it to this world safely. Our objective is to collect and pass along gently used and new infant clothing (premature to 12 months), blankets, burp cloths and bibs to underprivileged newborns in Nashville.

Currently, Strick’s Gift is working with Baptist Hospital, Vanderbilt Hospital Medical Center, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and another great organization in town, Nurses for Newborns (www.nfnf.org). We collect donations of gently used and new infant clothing, blankets, burp cloths and bibs and then divide donations into individual bags. The bags bear the Strick's Gift logo, and the items are wrapped in blue tissue paper. We hope to have at least seven days worth of clothing for each newborn. We present these items to the families in the hospitals as a gift. Each gift is brought directly to the baby in need just hours after he or she is born by a nurse or social worker that is familiar with the needs of the child. With each bag a card of well wishes from "One Angel to Another" is attached.

Strick’s Gift is a unique opportunity to impact newborns almost immediately. Additionally, it is a unique opportunity to address a significant need that you may not have realized is so great.

If you would like to participate please go to www.stricksgift.org and see how to donate – or just go ahead and email us at info@stricksgift.org and we’ll write you back!

Thank you!

Cumberland River Challenge 2009

The Friends of the Cumberland River Bicentennial Trail
10th annual bike ride to support and maintain the trail.
October 17, 2009

The two beautiful route options, as described on their website:
  • The very flat 11-mile Family Ride follows the Cumberland River along Chapmansboro Road which offers spectacular views and returns along the recently paved trail. This route will give the rider an opportunity to visit the trail and bridge.
  • The 31 and 62-mile courses will take you from the bluffs of the Cumberland River through the "hills and hollers" up to the Highland Rim. The paved routes follow lightly traveled rural roads through Cheatham and Montgomery Counties. This is hill country, so expect a few good climbs while you enjoy the early fall foliage.
It's a very fun family event for a great cause!
