Climb for a Cause in Clarksville

On December 4th join Outdoor Recreation in a Holiday Celebration at the Challenge Course Complex. ODR staff will be available to assist you on any of our four unique structures.

Check out the 50 foot tall Climbing Wall, or Alpine Tower, or our 30 foot free falling swing we call the Giant Swing, and do not forget the biggest structure, the Odyssey Course. Groups will be brought through the Odyssey every half hour, so don’t miss your chance to try out the ultimate jungle gym.

The cost is $8.00 per person for those participating in the climbing the Challenge Course, or bring a gift and climb for free. Outdoor Recreation (ODR) is also partnering with the Holiday House program here at Fort Campbell. The goal of Holiday House is to provide gifts to Fort Campbell Military Families who would otherwise not receive holiday gifts. We are in need of gifts for children ages 9 to 17. The value of the gift should range between $10.00 and $25.00.

Due to lack of space, no bikes, clothing, or baby furniture/diapers will be collected at this location. Please help us support a great cause from 10:00am until 2:00pm. For more information about the Challenge Course Open House and Holiday Drive, please call Outdoor Recreation at 270-412-7855.

Flood Relief: Opportunities To Serve:

Reprinted from Chris Royalty at 24Church.com:
This Saturday will be a big day in Cheatham County for our recovery and relief efforts and you have several different ways you can put your Hands On Cheatham County if you have the time:

1. Community Clean Up - There are literally hundreds of homes in our area that have experienced some level of flood damage from a few feet of water in the basement to complete destruction. All of these homes need assistance from moving out personal items, furniture and appliances to pulling up carpet and tearing out drywall. The Cheatham Chamber is organizing this effort and will kick it off with a Briefing and Assignment at 7:00am this Saturday May 15 at Cheatham Middle School. PLEASE be sure to first register as a volunteer at www.cheathamchamber.org 'Hands On Cheatham County'.

If you will be a part of this clean up effort, you are STRONGLY urged to first attend the Flood Disaster Trainings Thursday 5/13 at 6:30pm at Freds in Ashland City (the Donation Center). You will need this information for your own safety and for that of the homes you will be working on.

2. Community Family Relief Day - The Pleasant View Civitan Club and several other groups are working tirelessly to plan and organize a community event this Saturday 5/15 to benefit and support the families of Cheatham County that have been affected by the flood. This event is in conjunction with their previously scheduled Movie in the Park and will be full day! They are seeking volunteers to come out and help them love on these families, lend a hand and bring a smile to their faces. There will be family friendly events, inflatables, live music, food and much more. Wether you are able to serve or not, you are encouraged to come out with your family and have some fun! Spend time with your neighbors and new friends and love on people!

This volunteer opportunity is perfect for those of you who have small children or are physically unable to clean out houses or just want to love on families who need it. If you are interested helping out with this, please email Deb.Haines@24Church.com. There will be more details coming in the next few days!

3. Collection and Distribution Sites  - Both the FRED's location and the Bethesda Center are still in need of volunteers! Hundreds of families have been helped by the generosity of this community through these two locations and the need has not gone away just because most of the water is gone. If you have a few hours to help receive donations, sort and organize and love on the families coming in, call the Cheatham Chamber at (615) 792-6722.

4. Feed People! - The volunteers that will be out in the homes and in the Donation centers are and will be working non-stop! If your talent is Hospitality and Food, consider bringing lunches, drinks and snacks to these volunteers. A bottle of water and a ham sandwich will go a long way towards our recovery. If you would like to help with this, please email Gina.Hollingsworth@24Church.com.

New Clarksville Greenway

It sounds like Clarksville's new greenway is a beautiful place for family walks! I can't wait to go check it out with our bikes & strollers!

Bark Park at Heritage Park in Clarksville

(from Clarksville Parks & Rec blog)

The new Bark Park is open daily to dogs and their owners. It is a great place to take your canine friend for some exercise or just some good fun. The park opens at dawn and closes at dusk.

Halloween Activities in Clarksville

(from Clarksville Parks & Rec blog)

Whether your idea of Halloween is taking your children trick-or-treating, visiting a spooky haunted house or carving a pumpkin, Clarksville Parks and Recreation has something for you.

If you enjoy being frightened and chased by ghouls, you will not want to miss this year’s Kleeman Haunted Mansion on Saturday, October 24. The free event takes you through the Kleeman Community Center which has been transformed into a dark and haunted mansion inside. Be prepared to scream!

Tours through the Kleeman Haunted Mansion begin at 6p.m. Kids under the age of 8 must have a parent or guardian present to participate. Admission is free.

For those who prefer less scary Halloween festivities filled with free candy, costumes and carved pumpkins, the first ever Fright on Franklin is the event for you.

Local businesses will line Franklin Street in Downtown Clarksville on Saturday, October 31 to pass out candy to trick-or-treating kids. Fright on Franklin is also the perfect place to sport the Halloween costume you have been working on. The Costume Contest will award winners in several age groups from infants to senior adults. There is even a costume contest for dogs. Dress up your pooch for a chance to win the award for Best Dog Costume.

Is your jack-o-lantern the best looking on your block every year? Try your hand at pumpkin carving for a Best Carved Pumpkin award at Fright on Franklin. Stop by the Downtown Market on Saturday, October 24 to purchase and carve your pumpkin. All pumpkins will be displayed throughout Franklin Street businesses where they will be judged.

While carving pumpkins is for everyone ages 7 to senior adults, there will also be pumpkin painting available for the little ones. The Best Painted Pumpkin contest will be open to kids ages 1-6 and divided into age groups. The Best Carved Pumpkin contest is also divided into age groups.

Fright on Franklin activities begin at 4p.m. with the Costume Contest kicking off at 5p.m. Admission is free.

Cumberland River Challenge 2009

The Friends of the Cumberland River Bicentennial Trail
10th annual bike ride to support and maintain the trail.
October 17, 2009

The two beautiful route options, as described on their website:
  • The very flat 11-mile Family Ride follows the Cumberland River along Chapmansboro Road which offers spectacular views and returns along the recently paved trail. This route will give the rider an opportunity to visit the trail and bridge.
  • The 31 and 62-mile courses will take you from the bluffs of the Cumberland River through the "hills and hollers" up to the Highland Rim. The paved routes follow lightly traveled rural roads through Cheatham and Montgomery Counties. This is hill country, so expect a few good climbs while you enjoy the early fall foliage.
It's a very fun family event for a great cause!
